Why is inclusive language important to Future Group?

Words have power. They carry weight and history, implications and sometimes unintended meanings, depending on the context they are received in. As a business that prides itself on being ethical and progressive, we want our language to uphold our values.

The purpose of this guide

The Inclusive Language Guide is a collection of information from organisations and communities in a range of areas, as well as things we’ve learned from our own people.

This guide is not meant to police the voices of Future Group employees, but to encourage you to think more consciously about communicating, and learning to include as many people as possible through your choices in language. We're not sharing this guide to tell you that you're right or wrong. We’re sharing it because we’re all on a journey and these are our learnings. We invite you to add your experiences and your knowledge to this piece of work by leaving comments or points of discussion.

How to use this guide

This guide sets out general principles as guidance for using inclusive language before discussing good practice for inclusive language across different communities. This guide will share some examples of language to avoid, however we acknowledge this can be subjective and may differ across communities and context. The best practice is to keep an open mind, ask and engage.
